Introduction and ethos of subject

Our ethos is to provide pupils with worthwhile and educative experiences in as many activities as possible, in the hope that they will pursue any interests through participation outside school and into later life. The department is also heavily committed to extra-curricular PE whether it is through Inter House competition, Period 6 or school fixtures. The department are keen to ensure all pupils have the opportunity to experience competitive sport and we are always looking to improve and extend the range of opportunities we offer.

KS3

Our KS3 curriculum consists of a wide range of sporting activities throughout Years 7 to 9 and students will have the opportunity to experience these. This will happen by learning the skills, techniques and tactics within them, alongside the rules and tactics to progress and succeed.

KS4

Core PE curriculum Our Year 10 and 11 students gain 1 hour of physical education per week and cover many sporting activities throughout each year. Year 10 follow a progressive Scheme of Learning that builds upon Year 9, developing skills and techniques as well knowledge and understanding of the sport. Our year 11 students follow an options process, which allows them to select from a wide range of sports on offer. Their option choice will develop their knowledge through ‘games for understanding’. OCR Sports Studies Both the delivery and assessment of course will involve a combination of theoretical and practical lessons, culminating in assignments being produced and marked, practical ability being assessed plus 25% external assessment (Contemporary issue in Sport). The examination, practical section and assignments will be graded on a sliding scale ranging from a level 1 Pass to a level 2 Distinction* (A / A* equivalent).

Intent – What is WCSA aiming to achieve through its Physical Education curriculum?

To be active physically, demonstrating knowledge and understanding mainly through physical activity.

  • To engage in activities that develop cardiovascular health, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.

  • To develop independence through problem-solving physical challenges, evaluating, modifying technique and consolidating skills through practise and repetition.

  • To promote health awareness and the value of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

  • To instil a sense of good sportsmanship, and encourage recognition of other pupils’ contribution.

  • To develop leadership skills, responsibility and self-awareness.

  • To support the development of self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and helping pupils to cope with both success and failure in competitive and co-operative activities.

  • To develop skills as a team player, including praise for others and motivation skills.

  • To recognise and follow relevant rules, laws, codes, etiquette and safety procedures for different activities or events, in practice and during competition.

  • To ensure pupils who choose to follow a vocational PE pathway in KS4 leave WCSA with a PE qualification which reflects the best of their ability.
